CADENHEAD, James Finister (1874-c1920)
Aberdeen c1892 (DL 1896); 1CL Wallasey 1898; CL Johannesburg, South Africa, 1904-1910
Johannesburg Public Library, founded in 1889, was a subscription library when Cadenhead took over, and run on amateur lines. He did much to bring order out of chaos, began stock-building and introduced successful lectures. But his years there were mostly frustrating ones of post-war financial stringency. He resigned in 1910, ostensibly on health grounds, and may have emigrated to Canada.
R F Kennedy Heart of a city: a history of the Johannesburg Public Library (1970) is an unusually detailed history of a single institution which contains much information on Cadenhead and his work there.
